VIDEO PRODUCTION

Creating visual stories where performance, music and cultural history intersect.

Film, documentary and promotional work spanning performance, music heritage and original creative production — from concept and direction to final release.

FEATURED FILM PROJECT
THE BONZOS — UNBOXING DAY FILM

In 2024 I produced and directed The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band's Unboxing Day film, created to launch The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band’s major Still Barking box set release.

The project brought together surviving Bonzos Rodney Slater, Roger Ruskin Spear and “Legs” Larry Smith, alongside Kevin Eldon and Paul Putner, in a film that celebrated the band’s irreverent legacy while introducing it to new audiences.

The film premiered at the BFI at an event I co-hosted with Samira Ahmed - a moment that felt less like promotion, and more like cultural preservation.

PROMOTIONAL VIDEO PRODUCTION

Beyond feature projects, I create visual campaigns for artists, estates and record labels.

This includes promotional films and animated content for:

•Vivian Stanshall releases (Madfish)

• Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band releases (Madfish)

• The John Mayall Second Generation box set (Madfish)

• Sophie Aldred’s Ace Odyssey (Eh? Aye!)

• Additional music-led release campaigns

These projects often combine archive material, newly shot footage and motion graphics - including 3D animation - to create visually distinctive release identities.

The aim is always the same: clarity, energy and narrative precision.

DOCUMENTARY & ARTIST PROFILE FILMS

PLENTY-MENTAL JOURNEY — JOHN HALSEY (DVD)

Plenty Cuvv.jpg

I produced and directed extensive video content for drummer John Halsey’s documentary DVD Plenty-Mental Journey, released during The Rutles tour.

The project grew into a full portrait of John’s life in music — from his early years with Patto, to recording with Lou Reed on Transformer, through to his creation of Barry Wom in The Rutles.

I filmed new performances, created multiple promotional films, and recorded a long-form interview exploring his career, influences and experiences across decades of music history.

Visually, the release referenced Ringo Starr’s Sentimental Journey.

The cover photograph was staged outside Liverpool’s Empress Pub — the same location featured on the original album sleeve — creating a deliberate link between musical satire, influence and lineage.

The finished production combined newly filmed material, archive footage and photographic elements into a cohesive documentary profile, authored and produced for commercial DVD release and tour distribution.

The collaboration extended beyond film. I wrote the song “Enough”, released as a single by Barry Wom & Wom Direction, created the visual sleeve design, and originated the phrase “Keep Calm and Barry Wom.”

The release was issued on my own record label, alongside other artist-led projects including Parrotopia. My work moves fluidly between film, music and design - shaping not only how stories are told, but how they are released into the world.

The popularity of the project drew national media attention, and ITV’s Granada Reports filmed coverage at the single launch in March 2018.

Later that year, while performing in Liverpool, Neil suggested we return to the Belvedere pub to film an additional promotional piece ahead of the band’s upcoming U.S. tour.

ARCHIVAL FILM RESTORATION & RECONSTRUCTION

Preserving performance history. Rebuilding lost broadcasts. Restoring what time erased.

Michael works extensively with rare, damaged and previously unseen film material - combining traditional restoration techniques with modern digital reconstruction to recover performances thought lost or unwatchable.

His archival work focuses not simply on preservation, but on rebuilding complete viewing experiences from fragmented or degraded sources.

FEATURED RECONSTRUCTION:
BONZO DOG DOO-DAH BAND -
COLOUR ME POP (BBC RECONSTRUCTION)

Some performances disappear.

The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band’s 1968 BBC Colour Me Pop programme was largely wiped, as so many broadcasts of that era were.

Working from surviving fragments of footage and low-quality domestic audio recordings, I digitally restored, stabilised and synchronised the material to rebuild the programme as a coherent broadcast production.

The reconstruction required multi-source alignment, image repair, grading and audio restoration — guided not only by technical process but by respect for the original broadcast.

The completed reconstruction was screened publicly at the BFI in 2024.

The third of my Still Barking productions screened that night was a promo I cut from existing footage from the Bonzos' Do Not Adjust Your Set appearances for their unreleased song 'Boo!' which was released in 2023 as a single to coincide with Hallowe'en

RECONSTRUCTION & RESTORATION CAPABILITIES

Michael’s archival work may involve:

• Footage stabilisation and image repair
• AI-assisted image and audio enhancement
• Time-stretching and re-synchronisation
• Multi-source reconstruction
• Archive grading and visual matching
• Recovery of damaged or incomplete broadcasts
• Integration of domestic recordings and secondary sources

Each project is approached with the aim of preserving historical integrity while creating material suitable for contemporary presentation, screening and release. This work represents a core principle of my practice: performance history should not fade quietly into static.

ARCHIVAL APPROACH

Performance history is fragile. Broadcast material disappears. Recordings degrade.

Michael’s work focuses on reconstructing not just images and sound, but the experience of performance itself — ensuring historically significant material remains accessible, watchable and meaningful.

POST-PRODUCTION & VISUAL WORKFLOW

Michael works across professional editing and finishing platforms including:

  • DaVinci Resolve

  • Adobe Premiere Pro

  • Final Cut Pro

  • AVID workflows

  • Motion graphics and compositing tools

His studio is equipped for full digital post-production alongside media digitisation, enabling transfer and restoration of legacy formats including VHS and analogue video.

With additional training in graphic design, he integrates typography, layout and visual composition directly into film production - ensuring visual identity remains consistent across promotional campaigns.

SELECTED VIDEO PRODUCTION WORK

  • Producer / Director - Still Barking: The Unboxing Day (Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band)

  • Promotional film production - Madfish Music catalogue releases

  • Trailer production - Sophie Aldred’s Ace Odyssey

  • Archival reconstruction and restoration - broadcast performance recovery

  • Music video production from historic BBC archive material

  • Commercial video editing, motion graphics and release promo content

PRODUCTION APPROACH

Michael’s video work is guided by three core principles:

Story first - visual material must serve narrative meaning and emotional impact.

Respect for source - archival footage is treated with historical sensitivity and care.

Clarity of presentation - restoration and editing aim to reveal performance, not obscure it.

Whether creating new film or reconstructing historic material.

CONTINUING WORK

Michael continues to develop new film and restoration projects alongside ongoing promotional and archive work. At present he is working on a portrait of documentary film-maker Lawrence Moore entitled A Reflection for release on spring equinox.

He collaborates with artists, estates and record labels to preserve significant visual material and create compelling new screen content for contemporary audiences.
